I am an historical novelist and rarely read murder mysteries. However, this one caught my attention and I couldn’t put it down. Charlie Simpson is a rich, leisured, middle aged man,a bit overweight and out of shape, who gets cuckolded by his girl friend who takes off with his best friend. He wants revenge. He wants to murder both of them. He becomes obsessed and makes a list of them and others he wants to murder on his Smart Phone. In fact, he begins to sound like a psychopath with his lists and plans. In the middle of all this, out pops a sexy beautiful ghost named Nye who comes out of his phone to advise him on how to murder those who have done him wrong. She leads him on a series of adventures that takes us through a supernatural world with a touch of horror at the end. Add in lots of full English breakfasts, with beans, sausages, fried bread, bacon rashers, and blood pudding and burgers for lunch and you have a cholesterol laden diet that would drive anyone to commit murder. My biggest complaint, Burton writes Nye’s dialogue in heavy Scots burr dialect and some Scots Gaelic. Frankly, this slows down the story and I have no clue as to what Nye is saying half the time. His writing moves the plot along quickly. He never bores you and the ending is lovely. I’m in a writers group and we have a novelist who wrote a novel set in hell.
